Today’s D&C has an article about yet another interfaith collaboration in the Rochester area. This latest one involved the presentation of a program called The Two Thousand Year Road to the Holocaust. The presentation took place at Temple B’rith Kodesh in Brighton. There are several aspects of this presentation that bear examination.
First of all, the presentation was part of a series of talks that has been spearheaded by Morris Wortman, one of Rochester’s most prominent abortionists. Wortman is not exactly shy and retiring when it comes to his advocacy for abortion. He has come out publicly a number of times in support of taking the lives of the unborn. In fact, because he is such a notorious abortionist, there is a pro-life Rosary prayed every Friday in front of his clinic. His clinic is also the destination for the annual Good Friday Stations of the Cross in Reparation for Abortion.
What is especially galling about this latest interfaith gathering was the participation of two local Catholic deacons. Both Deacon Thomas Driscoll and Deacon Anthony Sciolino were presenters at this forum. Here is what Deacon Sciolino had to say about the event:
“Something then went terribly wrong for Christianity during the Holocaust. And what resulted from the obvious disconnect between Christian belief and Christian behavior was the worst catastrophe in human history. Jews ponder the Holocaust and rightly ask: Where was God? Christians must to do the same and, in addition, ask: Where was the Church?”
So, there you have it-an interfaith event, spearheaded by Rochester’s most prominent abortionist, at which one of the DOR’s deacons blames Christianity and the Catholic Church for the Holocaust.
This latest event provides further confirmation that the DOR is a toothless tiger on the issue of abortion. It’s hard to take them seriously when they so callously participate in an event spearheaded by prominent abortion provider.

... protect reproductive rights and women's health

On Barack Obama's first day as president, he will have the opportunity to repeal the Global Gag Rule, signaling a new day for reproductive rights and health in the United States and around the world. According to this rule, which President George W. Bush reinstated on his first day in office in 2001, no US-family planning aid can be provided to a foreign organization that performs abortions, provides counseling or referrals for abortion, or even advocates for legal abortion.
The Global Gag Rule forces foreign organizations into a difficult choice. They can accept aid with harmful restrictions. Or they can reject US funds that help provide critical birth-control supplies and assistance - things that are essential in protecting the lives of millions of women by reducing unintended pregnancy; unsafe abortion and childbirth; and sexually transmitted infections.
Here at home, the picture has become increasingly grim during the Bush administration. Politics has trumped a woman's right to make personal, private decisions about reproductive health, and ideology has displaced science as the foundation for information provided to our young people. To reverse the damage of the past eight years and advance access to reproductive health care and information, the Obama administration must:
1) Reverse a "midnight" Bush administration rule change. Under this new rule, individual health-care providers who receive federal funding can redefine abortion any way they want - including saying that the most common forms of birth control cause abortion. They can then refuse to provide them.
2) Ensure affordable and accessible reproductive-health services for all women.
- Make birth control more affordable for millions of college and low-income women. Because of an error made by Congress in 2005, the cost of birth control in many health centers has risen by almost 900 percent from what it was a short time ago.
- Fully fund Title X, America's family-planning program. Every year, it helps five million low-income women plan pregnancies, prevent sexually transmitted infections, and detect breast and cervical cancer - and the need is growing.
- Expand Medicaid coverage for birth control. Every dollar spent on family-planning services saves four dollars on other Medicaid services. States are required to provide Medicaid pregnancy-related care, but they are not mandated to provide Medicaid coverage for birth control, and only some of them do. Making birth-control coverage available under Medicaid could save state and federal governments more than $1.5 billion annually after three years.
- Require equity in contraceptive insurance coverage. Although more than half of states require insurers that cover prescriptions to include birth control, the rest don't. Lack of coverage is costly for insurers who end up paying for childbirth or abortion, and for women whose physical and financial well-being may be undermined by an unintended pregnancy.
3) End funding for abstinence-only sex-education programs. In the last decade, over $1.5 billion in federal and state funds has been wasted on ineffective and dangerous abstinence-only programs that deny teenagers life-saving information about birth control and responsible decision-making.
4) Protect abortion access. On April 18, 2007, the US Supreme Court upheld the first-ever federal law banning an abortion procedure. This gave politicians the green light to interfere in the private health-care decisions of women and families. The decision retreats from more than 30 years of precedent that says women's health must be the paramount concern in laws that restrict abortion access. This wake-up call not only reinforces the importance of Supreme Court appointments that our new president makes, but once again demands vigilance to ensure that politics does not restrict a woman's ability to make her own health-care decisions in consultation with her doctor.

Archangel School, in Irondequoit, is an independent Catholic school that is not under the governance of the rapidly failing diocesan school system in Rochester, NY. Archangel was founded by a staunch Catholic layman, Mike Macaluso, in order to assure an authentic Catholic education for students in the greater Rochester area. The school is not subject to the whims of the foundering DOR, so it cannot be shuttered by an uncaring bureaucracy. It is, however, subject to the charitable support that is necessary in order to enable the school to sustain its mission.
The students at Archangel attend daily Mass, are thoroughly instructed in the Faith, and are nurtured in their pursuit of academic excellence. The staff is dedicated and hard working. The parents of students are active and involved.
