A Post Abortion Bible Study for Women

It is astonishing that although abortion has been legal in the United States for more than thirty years very little has been written for or about the many millions of men who have been the partner or friend of the women who have had an abortion. Much has been written about the legal, medical, and religious aspects of abortion itself and numerous studies have been done outlining the effects, both positive and negative, on women. But what about the men?

Summary: Past Abortion Might be a Factor in Autoimmune Diseases
Larger than normal fetomaternal transfer of cells occurs after an abortion. Factor in autoimmune diseases.
-
In human pregnancies, bi-directional transfer of living maternal and embryonic cells begins with the implantation of the embryo and continues throughout the pregnancy. Maternal cells pass into the fetal circulation and fetal cells pass into the maternal circulation. When fetal cells enter into the mother's circulation, they can exist via reproduction in maternal tissues for decades after the pregnancy and lead to fetal microchimerism (FMc). Maternal cells also enter into the fetal circulation, where they can exist via reproduction in the child's tissues long after birth of the child, even into adulthood and lead to maternal microchimerism (MMc).1 Studies have found that MMc in a newborn is usually benign or beneficial, but is associated with a spectrum of chronic inflammatory diseases.1 In addition to a child acquiring the MMc directly from his/her mother, microchimerism is also possible to be derived from an older sibling. Cells originating from the gestation of an older sibling could exist via uterine placental connection to the fetus of a subsequent pregnancy.1 A 2001 study found that a larger than normal fetomaternal transfer of cells occurs after an abortion.2,3 Subsequent analysis of published research, that included pregnancy history information, concluded that fetal loss was significantly associated with the development of microchimerism.4 Additionally, the effect of procreation with multiple partners has been identified as a possible influence on the development of microchimerism. Researchers found that women who had children with more than one partner had higher mortality rates than those who had only a single partner.2 Furthermore, it has been suggested that MMc is more likely to occur with elective terminations of pregnancy than with spontaneous miscarriages.5 It has been theorized that the persistence of fetal cells following pregnancy can lead to maternal immune responses to these immunologically foreign cells and may contribute to postpartum autoimmune diseases.2 Other studies have suggested that fetal cell microchimerism may occur in a much wider spectrum.2

Psychological Effects of Abortion
http://www.abortionincanada.ca/health/psycological_effects.html
Women who have undergone induced abortion are more likely to experience mental health problems. These problems can range from mild depression to severe anxiety disorders. In a 2006 study conducted in New Zealand it was found that “in all comparisons, those becoming pregnant and seeking abortions had significantly higher rates of disorder than the not pregnant group and, with the exception of anxiety disorder, significantly higher rates of disorder than the pregnant no abortion group. Researchers concluded that “exposure to abortion is a traumatic life event which increases longer-term susceptibility to common mental disorders.”
When compared to women who have given birth, women who have had an abortion also have significantly higher rates of admission to hospital for psychiatric reasons. In a 2003 study sponsored by the Ontario College of Physicians and Surgeons it was found that women who had an induced abortion had a five times higher rate of admission to hospital for psychiatric reasons in the following three months than women who had not undergone induced abortion.
Women with a past history of abuse or mental problems as well as women with a lack of support, conflicting belief systems or those in their teen years are at an even higher risk for developing psychological problems following an abortion. Researchers have also found that women who are pressured or coerced into having an abortion are also “likely to experience more distress around the decision, as well as guilt, anxiety and depression.”
Common psychological health problems linked to induced abortion
Women who have undergone abortion also tend to smoke more frequently, abuse alcohol, develop eating disorders, abuse or neglect subsequent children and experience relationship problems.
Anxiety
Women who undergo abortion show higher levels of generalized anxiety when compared to women who carry to term.
Depression
In a National Longitudinal Study of Youth conducted in the US it was found that “women who reported induced abortion were 65% more likely to score in the high-risk range for clinical depression than women whose pregnancies resulted in birth.” The Planned Parenthood Federation of America reports that approximately 20% of post-abortive women experience some form of mild depression, while 10% of post-abortive women will experience persistent depression.
Drug Abuse
Induced abortion has been linked to increased rates of substance abuse, especially among young woman. A 2006 study conducted in New Zealand by David Fergusson found that young women who aborted had a significantly high rate of drug dependence than young women who had never been pregnant and pregnant young women who carried to term. A 2004 study published in the American Journal of Drug and Alcohol Abuse found that women who had had an abortion reported using marijuana twice as frequently as women who carried a pregnancy to term.
Post Traumatic Stress Disorder
According the Canadian Mental Health Association, approximately one out of every 10 people is affected by an anxiety disorder known as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). This type of disorder is typically caused by a “psychologically traumatic event” which can include “seeing another person harmed or killed.”Symptoms of this disorder can be classified in three different categories: “the first involves re-experiencing the event … avoidance and emotional numbing are the second … the third category of symptoms involves changes in sleeping patterns and increased alertness. Insomnia is common.”
One study found that at least 19% of women who had undergone abortions suffered from PTSD. A 2007 study on parental coping after the termination of pregnancy for fetal anomalies found that 44% of women suffered symptoms of PTSD and 13.8% of women experienced some kind of psychological distress.
Sexual Dysfunction
According to the Elliot Institute women who have undergone abortion can experience “loss of pleasure from intercourse, increased pain, an aversion to sex and/or males in general, or the development of a promiscuous life-style” in approximately 30 – 50% of cases. A 2003 research study found that 10 – 20% of women reported that they experienced negative effects in their sexual/couple relationship and on sexual functioning after an induced abortion.
Sleep Problems
Recent results from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health found that young women who had undergone abortion reported higher rates of sleep disturbance than women who had not had an abortion. According to the Elliot Institute, 36% of women who had undergone an abortion were experiencing sleep disturbances eight weeks after the abortion.
Suicidal ideation
Induced abortion has been linked to suicidal thoughts and suicide attempts. In a 2006 New Zealand study it was found that teenagers aged 15-18 who underwent an abortion were twice as likely to experience suicidal ideation when compared to teens the same age who had never been pregnant or teens who had been pregnant but chose not to have an abortion. The rates of suicidal ideation were also higher for 18-25 year olds in the same study.
Suicide rates were also found to be higher among women who had an induced abortion, in a study conducted by Finnish researchers. This study used data collected using several administrative registers, including the death register which tracks all deaths among citizens of Finland. It was found that 60% of suicides occurred among women who aborted when compared to women who had either been pregnant and given birth or had been pregnant and miscarried. Suicide rates were twice as high for women who had aborted when compared to only those women who had been pregnant and miscarried.

In most of the United States, 24 abortions are carried out for every 100 live births. In New York, 72 abortions occur for every 100 live births.
The continuing boom in abortions—90,157 were performed in the city in 2006, the last year for which statistics are available—apparently means that many women are using abortion as their birth control method of choice. That concerns health advocates, who point out that the procedure sometimes causes complications and is more expensive than contraception. The high rate also shows that these women are not protected against AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases.
“No doctor would ever tell a woman that abortion was one of the choices she should rely on for contraception,” says Iffath Hoskins, chief of obstetrics and gynecology at Lutheran Medical Center in Brooklyn.
The high rate is especially troubling because it indicates that more city residents are turning to abortion. Years ago, most abortions in the city—up to two-thirds in some years—were performed on women from out of town who flocked to New York because of its liberal abortion policies. Now, however, 93% of the abortions in New York City are performed on city residents.
The easy availability of abortion and not enough access to affordable contraception may be reasons behind the city's high abortion rate. An average of 250 abortions are performed in the city each day at more than 200 clinics and doctor's offices.
And even though free or low-cost contraception is offered through 59 publicly funded programs at 218 sites in New York state, mostly in New York City, more could be provided, says Deborah Kaplan, deputy commissioner of the city Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.
“To me, the problem is access,” says Ms. Kaplan. “If we improved access to contraceptives, there would be a reduction in abortion.”
Costly to taxpayers
That would be good news to taxpayers. In a time of fiscal constraints, abortion is costing the state at least $16 million in Medicaid spending annually, and city taxpayers still more through a city Health and Hospitals Corp. policy that provides free abortions to poor women at its facilities. The surgical costs alone are between $1,000 and $1,800 per abortion, compared with the $425 average annual cost for birth control pills.
But the biggest concern over the high abortion rate is the impact it is having on women's health.
Most health experts agree that it is wise to keep abortion safe, legal and available in New York, but some are also concerned that too many women are not using other methods to prevent unwanted births.
Surgical abortion always carries risks, though slight, of complications—including ones that can tear or scar the uterus and compromise a woman's ability to have healthy children in the future, Dr. Hoskins says.
There is an ongoing debate about the emotional consequences of abortion. A spokeswoman for the state Department of Health says that no studies have shown it damages women psychologically. Dr. Hoskins and others interviewed disagree and offer anecdotes about patients who felt guilt and regret.
“I've never had a patient who took the decision to end a pregnancy cavalierly,” says Dr. Hoskins.
Then there is the issue of spreading sexually transmitted diseases. Dr. Robert Fullilove, a Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health researcher and expert on STD prevention, is concerned that the high abortion figures are a sign that women in the city are putting themselves at risk of catching AIDS or other diseases.
Unprotected sex
“Any time you see these high rates of abortion, it is a sign of high rates of women having unprotected sex,” he says.
That seems to be particularly true for New York City's African-American women. Though blacks make up about 24% of the city's population, black women were responsible for 45% of the abortions in the city in 2006. That mirrors a national trend, according to the Guttmacher Institute, which tracks abortion numbers and found that the rate among black women is twice the national average.
Since condoms prevent both pregnancy and STDs, many people in the public health community believe they are the best form of birth of control.
But DOHMH statistics show that condom use is falling, with only 35% to 40% of men using them in their most recent sexual encounter.
It may be especially difficult for black women in communities where men are scarce, due to incarceration or addiction problems, to insist that their partners use condoms.
“Once the ratio of women to men is 2 to 1, courtship rules go out the window,” Dr. Fullilove says.

"In every moment, in order for you to see what God truly expects from you, you have to take your eyes off your own image and fix them on the Lord."

(The Gift of Faith, Tadeusz Dajczer pg 79)
Ok, so now what? It is hard not to get discouraged in the face of the consequences for life from an Obama presidency, which unfortunately, has already started the ball rolling to overturn many restrictions on abortion. How can God possibly want its consequences if it means the destruction of more innocents? And yet, ours is not to know, only to keep our eyes on Christ and trust in Him who is Mercy itself. God is still in control, even in what appears to be a devastating defeat.
I am pleased to tell you all of some exciting events and opportunities. Please spread the word. In these times, it is even more crucial for us to get out the message of God’s mercy and forgiveness to all who have experienced abortion. It is also a time of opportunities for prayer and reparation for the sin of abortion, which we know will now increase.
May Our Merciful Lord help us to always keep our eyes on Him, the Lord and Creator of all Life.

- Men’s Day of Prayer & Healing – on November 22, 2009, a Men’s Day of Prayer and healing will be held at Our Lady of New York Convent in the Bronx. Rev Richard Roemer, CFR, will direct the day. This ministry, now in its fourth year, continues to grow as more and more men come forward to heal from involvement in a past abortion or to learn how to deal with the impact their spouses past abortion may be having on their marriage.
- Day of Remembrance – On January 21, 2009, Lumina is blessed to be able to sponsor, along with the New York Family Life Office, The USCCB Secretariat for Pro Life Activities, and The Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, DC, a “Day of Remembrance”. This prayer service will take place between 1pm – 4pm in the Crypt Church on the lower level of the Basilica. More than ever before, this service, which, over the past four years, Theresa Bonopartis along with The Sisters of Life, have hosted in different locations throughout New York, will allow us all to join together to pray for the unborn, all those touched by abortion and our nation. Those who have attended this day in the past would attest to the workings of the Holy Spirit as we ask for intercession for the cause of life, forgiveness and healing. It is a great blessing to be able to bring this to the Basilica the day before the March for Life!
- Pilgrimage – A Pilgrimage to Medjugore is to take place in March under the direction of Father Conrad Osterhaut, CFR. Anyone knowing Father would recognize what a great gift it is to have him lead this trip. What better time to invoke Our Lady than now, as we seek to remain under her mantle.
- Poor Pre Natal Day – Over the past month, we have received numerous calls from couples who aborted a child due to a poor pre natal diagnosis. We all recognize the pressures put on couples to abort, if their unborn child is seen as anything less than perfect. As this part of Luminas ministry, in its second year, continues to grow, we ask that you help get the word out for this day, which appears to be an answer to prayer for many out there suffering. Details in flyer above.
.
Thank you for your help in spreading the word.
In His Mercy,
Theresa Bonopartis

“I was deceived because I was not told the truth about what an abortion means to the life of an unborn baby. I was not told that at 10 weeks (which is when I had my abortion) my child was already fully formed. “I know millions of women across this country feel as I do about abortion. We all somehow know deep down inside that we alone made a horrible decision and no coined phrase about choice and rights or the denial of biological and fetal facts can ever erase the truth. Women Exploited
By Abortion
How many more women will be exploited, injured or killed by abortion? More than 4,000 women choose to abort every day. That’s about 1.5 million abortions each year.
Some of these women are sharing their very private and painful experiences to warn other women about the deep pain and suffering of abortion.
Many of these women have become pro-life volunteers, counselors and speakers to warn other women so they won’t be exploited by the people who promote and profit from abortion.

Survey: Emotional pain follows abortion
Is abortion psychologically safe for would-be mothers and fathers? Does having an abortion put men and women at risk of emotional suffering? A nationwide telephone survey conducted in February by the Elliot Institute reveals a full 85 percent of American adults believe negative emotional problems are common after an abortion. Even 60 percent of those who identified themselves as very pro-choice said they think emotional pain is common.
